What is Seed Cycling? Find out how it helps with PMS, fertility and menopause

Updated: May 4

Have you heard of Seed Cycling? Seed cycling is a natural, gentle yet effective way you can support your hormones and relieve PMS symptoms, boost fertility and alleviate menopause symptoms.

What is Seed Cycling?

Seed Cycling involves eating flax, pumpkin, sesame and sunflower seeds at different times of the month to support balanced hormone levels. This helps to reduce PMS symptoms, boost fertility and ease menopause symptoms. It's a great way to take advantage of the healing powers in food.

How does Seed Cycling Support PMS, Fertility and Menopause?

Seed Cycling balances estrogen and progesterone production naturally through foods. The cycle below assumes a 28-day cycle.

Days 1-14 of your cycle: consume seeds rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Flax seeds contain lignans which can help bind and remove excess estrogen. Pumpkin seeds are high in zinc which can support progesterone production.

  • 1 Tbsp flax seeds

  • 1 Tbsp pumpkin seeds

Days 15-28 of your cycle: sesame seeds are also high in lignans to help block excess estrogen while sunflower seeds help the liver detoxify hormones.

  • 1 Tbsp sunflower seeds

  • 1 Tbsp sesame seeds

Tip: If you have irregular periods, you can start phase one on the first of the month and switch to phase two after 2 weeks or follow the moon cycle which also lasts around 29 days.

Recipe Ideas

Sprinkle ground seeds into overnight oats, avocado toast, yoghurt, smoothies, soups or salads. You can also use them in protein balls or bars.

Does Seed Cycling Work?

Hormones are a delicate balance that are affected by many other factors like stress, sleep, activity, environment and all the other foods that we eat.

But there is really no harm (and only benefits) to eating more seeds for all the healthy fats and nutrients they bring. As with natural healing methods, it takes time for the body to adjust and react to the changes, so do try this out for at least 2-3 months.
